Recertification Advocacy Update

Oklahoma HIM Professionals,

Our voices have been heard and change has finally happened!  Today, April 22nd, AHIMA announced that after a thorough review and discussion among CCHIIM, the AHIMA board of directors, and AHIMA leadership along with new information, other industry factors, and member feedback, CCHIIM made the decision to adjust the certification requirements.  The 40% requirement will now include CEUs earned from Component Associations (CAs) including OkHIMA!

This change comes after the last six months the OkHIMA board leadership coming together with other CAs to create advocacy options for credentialed HIM professionals to voice their opinion as CAs were not initially included in the 40%.  We thank the countless number of credentialed professionals who sent in letters, signed the petition, shared posts, and joined the crusade to have CAs included in the 40%.  I truly believe this change will help improve the relationship between CAs and AHIMA as well as increase member satisfaction.

Further action is still being taken to ensure the needs of the members and CAs are more carefully considered in the future.  A committee of members from multiple CAs, including Oklahoma, are drafting a proposal to amend the AHIMA bylaws to prevent changes like this happening in the future.  I will keep you updated on these efforts as more unfolds.

Thank you again for advocating and having your voice heard!  It made a difference and changed the future for the better of credentialed HIM professionals.  We are stronger together!

Thank you,
Diana Flood, MS, RHIA, CMHP
OkHIMA President 2023-2024
